Douglas Mawson is best known as one of Australia’s great Antarctic explorers, but his deep connection to South Australia’s Flinders Ranges is a lesser-known part of his legacy.

That story is now being brought to life with the help of Arkaroola’s Chief Geoscientist, Stephen Hore.

Working alongside South Australian Museum volunteers, Stephen Hore has played a key role in highlighting the pioneering and geological relevance of the deciphered handwritten field diaries of Mawson, many of which document geological expeditions through the Flinders Ranges between 1906 and the 1950s.

Using the deciphered diaries, historic photographs, handwritten “mud maps” and his deep knowledge of the region, Steve has identified more than 100 geological locations visited by Mawson. These sites are now being mapped into a three-day walking route that allows visitors to follow Mawson’s journeys through the landscape.

Describing himself as a “rock detective”, Steve has helped pinpoint exact locations hidden within Mawson’s faded notes and photographs — sometimes narrowing down a single rock face within kilometres of rugged terrain. His work has revealed sites where Mawson searched for uranium and explored ancient geological formations that continue to define the Flinders Ranges today.

This research also highlights the strong historical link between Mawson and Arkaroola. One of Mawson’s students, Reg Sprigg, later went on to protect and establish what is now the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary — a legacy that continues through conservation, research and education.

Stephen Hore’s contribution ensures that Mawson’s South Australian work is not only preserved, but made accessible to future generations through immersive, on-country experiences.

We are thrilled to share that Steve Hore, Senior Geologist with the Geological Survey of South Australia, has accepted this inaugural role. This appointment recognises Steve’s exceptional expertise and deep knowledge of the region’s unique geology.

As Chief Geoscientist, Steve will continue to play an important role in guiding and educating visitors, researchers, and the wider community on the science behind South Australia’s spectacular Flinders Ranges. Welcome to South Australia’s first International Dark Sky Sanctuary

Arkaroola's designation as South Australia's first International Dark Sky Sanctuary is undeniably a landmark achievement. It highlights the value of our night skies, not just as a natural spectacle, but also as an irreplaceable resource for science, culture, and health. This recognition puts Arkaroola, and indeed South Australia, on the global map as a leader in preserving the night sky, promoting sustainable tourism, and championing environmental conservation.

In a world increasingly bathed in artificial light, the magnificence of the night sky is slowly fading from our view. However, sanctuaries like Arkaroola, recently recognised by the International Dark-Sky Association , are taking leaps and bounds to preserve the connection humans have to the dark night sky. These sanctuaries provide havens for wildlife, pristine skies for astronomers, and a chance for all to marvel at the magic and awe of the dark sky.

Arkaroola, a breathtaking wilderness sanctuary in South Australia, has earned the prestigious title of an International Dark Sky Sanctuary. Its rugged landscape, unique wildlife, and ancient Aboriginal culture draw tourists, geologists, biologists, and astronomers alike. Arkaroola's designation, formally approved on the 17th of July 2023, is a milestone in preserving our night skies, understanding the cosmos, and protecting the environment. The Significance of Dark Sky Sanctuaries

In the grand canvas of time, artificial light is a relatively new invention that has fundamentally altered our relationship with the night. Essentially, light pollution is the excessive, misdirected, or obtrusive artificial light produced by human activities. This excessive light has severe, often overlooked, implications for our planet, wildlife, human health, and scientific research.

For wildlife, the encroachment of artificial light disrupts natural rhythms and behaviours. Many species, from tiny insects to large mammals, rely on the cycle of day and night for survival - to hunt, to hide, to migrate, and to reproduce. Light pollution interferes with these patterns, threatening biodiversity and ecosystems. For humans, excessive exposure to artificial light at night can lead to a myriad of health problems, including sleep disorders, reduced immune function, and increased risks for obesity, depression, and even certain types of cancer.

Astronomy, a science that relies on the ability to observe celestial bodies in dark skies, has been significantly hampered by light pollution. Glare, skyglow, and other types of light pollution wash out starlight in the night sky, hinder astronomical research, and hide celestial features from view. This has grave implications not only for scientific progress but also for our cultural and philosophical perspectives, as we lose our connection with the cosmos.

These sanctuaries, each unique in their own way, collectively contribute to preserving our global heritage of starry skies, serving as vivid reminders of our place in the cosmos, and our responsibility to protect this precious resource for generations to come.

The Path to Arkaroola Becoming a Dark Sky Sanctuary

Arkaroola, rich in its unique natural attributes and historical significance, has long been a location of interest for astronomers. Its isolated position away from urban centres, combined with South Australia's characteristically clear skies, made it an optimal place for observing the cosmos. The Indigenous Adnyamathanha people, traditional custodians of the Arkaroola region, have long revered the night sky, embedding it in their rich cultural traditions and lore. In more recent times, Arkaroola’s astronomical significance has been celebrated through the establishment of the Arkaroola Astronomical Observatory , which has been instrumental in educating the public about the night sky.

The journey towards Arkaroola's designation as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary was not a straightforward path but rather a collective effort spanning several years. It required collaboration from the sanctuary’s management, local communities, government bodies, and the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA). Key steps in this process included gathering extensive data on the quality of Arkaroola's night sky, implementing strategies to control light pollution within the sanctuary, and developing a comprehensive long-term plan to protect and manage the area’s dark sky resource.

One crucial aspect of Arkaroola’s candidacy was demonstrating its exceptional night sky quality. This involved detailed measurements of sky brightness and meteorological conditions over an extended period, illustrating that the sanctuary's night sky met the stringent requirements set by the IDA. Concurrently, efforts were made to reduce existing light pollution within the sanctuary, which included revising lighting infrastructure to minimise skyglow and glare.

In addition to its natural attributes and light pollution management efforts, Arkaroola's strong commitment to public education about the importance of dark skies and its ongoing collaboration with local indigenous communities also strengthened its bid for sanctuary status.

After a careful review of Arkaroola’s application, the International Dark-Sky Association officially recognised Arkaroola as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary on 17th July 2023. The designation marked a milestone not only for Arkaroola but for the whole of South Australia, bringing global attention to the region's incredible natural beauty and commitment to preserving the night sky. The official announcement celebrated Arkaroola's exemplary dark skies and acknowledged the efforts made by the sanctuary and its supporters to achieve this recognition. Stargazing in the Flinders Ranges

The Flinders Ranges are an adventure traveller's dream - and a stargazer's paradise. With hardly any light pollution, the sky is crystal clear and packed with stars. Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary is home to some of the darkest skies in Australia, so here are our tips on making the most of your stargazing trip to Arkaroola, and further afield, in the Flinders Ranges.

Sleep Under the Stars

There is nothing quite like lying in a swag or peeking out of your open tent in the still of the night and feeling enveloped by the night sky. Camping is an easy way to enjoy some stargazing time and there are many great locations to pitch your tent. Arkaroola has 300 hectares of un-powered, bush-setting campgrounds which means you’ll be able to keep a good distance between you and other campers to minimise light sources and maximise your stargazing experience. There are many other paid and unpaid camping options throughout the region to choose from though including ones at Parachilna George , Wilpena Pound Resort , and within the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park itself, such as Acraman and Brachina East . All light sources will affect your view of the night sky so remember to put out your campfire as well as your lanterns for the best viewing conditions.

See the Stars Up Close

For those who prefer to be guided through the tapestry of stars and celestial bodies that make up the night sky then Arkaroola has a variety of Stargazing experiences, catering to novices and astronomers and everyone in between.

Our Under the Stars experience is perfect for the astronomy beginner, allowing learners to absorb the brilliance of the night sky and see the moon, stars and Milky Way through astronomy binoculars, from the comfort of a reclining camp lounge chair. To ensure the best viewing conditions this experience runs a week either side of the dark of the moon. You can check out the dark moon dates here .

Or, if you are looking for a front row seat with a view of the universe, Arkaroola runs three fully equipped astronomical observatories all designed and operated to ensure an unforgettable stargazing experience. Our Explore the Cosmos digital Astro Experience is made possible through our Ningana Imaging Observatory which allows visitors to view the wonders of our solar system and beyond into deep space in real time on the big screen. While Private Observatory tours can be arranged at our Dodwell and Sir Mark Oliphant observatories for a once-in-a-lifetime experience usually restricted to astronomers and scientists where you can go truly intergalactic and tour the universe under the best of stargazing conditions with customised commentary.

While not strictly stargazing, special outdoor events held at Arkaroola are a wonderful opportunity to spend a different kind of night under the stars! In 2022 guests joined us for an evening of bush dining and world-class entertainment for ‘ Under the Stars with the Stars ’. If you're looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure in South Australia’s Flinders Ranges, then Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary is the perfect place to visit. Take Time to Enjoy the Journey

Arkaroola is an 8-hour drive from Adelaide, which means you may want to stop along the way to stretch your legs from time to time. There’s plenty to see and do en route in addition to enjoying the ever-changing landscape for your car window. One of the most picturesque routes to the Flinders Ranges will take you through the Clare Valley , home to numerous wineries and local food producers which makes for a very tasty rest stop or overnight stop-over.

Hawker is considered the ‘hub’ of the Flinders, being located at the turn-off towards Wilpena Pound and the Northern Flinders Ranges. Hawker is a great stop for any last-minute supplies with a supermarket and fuel available, while Flinders Food Co. is the perfect coffee or lunch spot, with an exceptional menu featuring locally sourced ingredients.

Arrive at Arkaroola in time for your 2pm check-in and settle into your chosen accommodation before enjoying a 2-course dinner with South Australian wines in our restaurant.

Start with Stargazing

After dinner, we jump straight into exploring…the cosmos! Ningana Imaging Observatory is the latest addition to Arkaroola’s already impressive collection of astronomical venues and provides some of the most accessible stargazing in the Flinders Ranges. It allows visitors to experience a real-time, state of the art Digital Astro Experience without having to go too far from the main reception, bar and restaurant area. Seated indoors in a relaxing space, you'll be able to view the wonders of our solar system and beyond into deep space. The Observatory is just 100m from the main reception, making it the perfect end to a long day of travel and the perfect beginning to your Arkaroola visit.

Wake up Early for a Walk

Arkaroola has a number of self-guided walks and hikes on offer. Griselda Hill is a great walk for visitors short on time. The 2.5km walk takes around an hour and thirty minutes from Arkaroola Village and provides rewarding views over the surrounding ranges. For those looking to head a little further afield, the Kingsmill Falls area is a 2km walk that affords a good opportunity of Yellow-Footed Rock Wallaby and Euro sightings. Continue on the Kingsmill Creek walk, ranging from 2km to 8.6km, to see the World Heritage nominated Sturtian Tillites (~700MYO) and Arkaroola Reef (~650MYO).

Spend the Afternoon on a High

In the afternoon join our iconic Ridgetop Tour for a 4.5 hour open-top 4WD experience that will take you through the oldest parts of the Flinders Ranges as you ascend the Ridgetop Track. An exhilarating experience, you will have the opportunity to enjoy several lookouts and afternoon tea along the way taking in the spectacular views including the 1000m deep Yudnamutana Gorge, Lake Frome salt lake and the surrounding ancient granite mountains that make up Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary. Your guide will also share geological insights on the Flinders and Gammon Ranges along the way. The trip back down is as just as much of an adventure as the ascent so you’ll be well and truly ready for a relaxing swim in the pool or refreshing beverage at the bar before another delicious dinner in our restaurant.

We highly recommend some more personal stargazing from your accommodation before you turn in for the night, and en joying a hearty breakfast at our restaurant before getting back on the road to return home or continue on your Flinders Ranges exploration the next morning. If you’re not in a rush to head off, take another stroll to see if you can find one more wallaby or spot some of our amazing birdlife.

Sustainable Microgrid at Arkaroola

Energy and water are essential to the ability of Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary to operate in our unique and challenging environment.

We are delighted to be the subject of a winning bid for $1.3m to design and build a renewable energy microgrid on site. The federal government grant for improving energy reliability in regional and remote communities will turn Arkaroola into a showcase for renewable energy technologies that suit remote harsh conditions. We will be trialing designs that can cope with the heat and dust, and will operate reliably using only local skills and remote support.

CORENA deserves an enormous shout out for getting this project funded. CORENA is a charity that lends to community organisations to help them reduce their climate impact. CORENA volunteers, especially Monica Oliphant and Heather Smith, have worked with us to understand our energy use and propose the renewable energy alternative to the federal government.

Peter Moser at Ecotechsoft did our initial energy audit and will be involved in designing the controls and the education interface for the new system. Apex Energy have come onboard as the lead contractor and will project manage the whole installation. Glaciem Cooling specialise in thermal storage. The main idea here is that we can use sunshine during the day to produce hot water, refrigeration and airconditioning, night and day. We are grateful to all of these partners and look forward to working alongside each of them.

The first step in the project is to define three new scenarios beyond the way we operate at the moment.

Energy Sustainability: what is the best way to reach 100% renewable energy?
Water Sustainability: what are the different ways we can use surplus renewable energy to maintain or improve our water supplies?
Welcoming more visitors: With our dark skies reputation and the world heritage bid to recognise the geological record of the region, we will plan our microgrid to be designed with the ability to grow.

The project kicks off with feasibility and design work in November 2021. It will last 3 years but most of the equipment will be designed and installed in the first year.

We are excited for the year ahead and we will be publishing about all the technologies we investigate along the way - including but not limited to:

Hike Wilpena Pound

Wilpena Pound is a large natural amphitheater surrounded by high cliffs, near Wilpena in the Flinders Ranges. The word “pound” is an aboriginal name referring to a place where people could gather, most likely for ceremonies. Wilpena Pound is one of the most popular hiking destinations in South Australia, due to it’s beauty and abundance of flora and fauna. Hike the leisurely hour-long Drought Busters Trail highlighting native plants, this stunning location in the Flinders Ranges is great for both novices and experienced hikers alike.

Birdwatch in Brachina Gorge

The Flinders Ranges in South Australia is a remarkable place to go birdwatching. The amazing birdlife in the region is a result of the high diversity in both species and habitat, and Brachina Gorge is the perfect example of this. The Brachina Gorge and Bunyeroo Gorge is within the Flinders Ranges National Parks and are accessible from the Wilpena to Blinman road and Hawker to Parachilna road. This spectacular gorge with its towering cliffs and crystal-clear waters is home to many different species of birds including the Ringneck and must see Red Capped Robin. If bird watching isn't your thing, thats okay! the gorge has a geological trail featuring the geological history of the Flinders Ranges covering a period of approximately 150 million years!

Swim in Aroona Dam

If you’re looking for a place in the Flinders Ranges to cool off then look no further than Aroona Dam. This hidden gem is one of the most picturesque locations in the Flinders Ranges. Located near Leigh Creel, this oasis-like dam offers something for everyone. The best location to view the lake is from the public car park on the northern side, it also has a wonderful 5.5 kilometre interpretive walk, which starts below the main wall of the 5000 megaliter dam, the largest of its type outside of Adelaide.. It’s an amazing spot to do some fishing, go for a swim or just kick back and enjoy the scenery.

Experience the Ridgetop Track at Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary

Arkaroola's Ridgetop tour is one of the premier experiences in the Flinders Ranges, and it's easy to see why. This experience is an unforgettable encounter with the timeless terrain and unique natural beauty of the northern Flinders Ranges. Travelling through the oldest parts of the Flinders Ranges, home to flora and fauna found nowhere else, you will explore the ancient granite mountains and hillsides covered in native bush with your very own expert guide and live commentary - remember to keep your eyes peeled, you might even spot an endangered Yellow-footed Rock wallaby.

Rain Rain Rain

At last, after almost 3 years we have had a decent amount of rain as 73.4mm fell on the 1st and 2nd of February 2020. Not since January 2017 have we had any significant rain and things were looking bleak. Flora and Fauna have been hit very hard and we were looking at implementing alternative water strategies here at Arkaroola Village. However, this rain event has filled the waterholes and provide much needed water in all parts of the sanctuary. Damage to tracks and roads has been moderate considering the amount of water and rock and soil that moved through the landscape over a very short period. G’day and Welcome to our brand new website! It has been a long time coming but now it’s here. Take some time to take a good look around. It is jam packed with information about visiting Arkaroola, tours, accommodation, facilities everything you need to know should be here.

With heaps of images and videos it is also a great place to visit if you have already been to Arkaroola. For the first time visitor we feel that we now have a functional multi-media interface which allows the traveller a window into what to expect once you venture into this part of the world.

A work in progress, the site will continue to develop.
